Hydroneer gem compressor

Been trying to figure out if I am missing a requirement on the gem compressor. I built the gem compressor, connected to water, and dumped a bunch of gems in it. The handle won't engage and compress the gems. Is there a water pressure requirement? Can only have one gem inside at a time (videos contradict that). A certain weight of gems? What am I missing? So, I recently started playing Hydroneer, but for some reason when I try to use the gem compressor manually it just won't press anything. Here I just slapped the shortest line together and with the setup I put together here it still won't let me click to press. You can see there are a few emeralds in there but it still won't let me pull the lever.
